Chancellor of CHCP featured in Newsweek around the critical connection of “belonging” and student success

This week, Eric Bing, CHCP’s chancellor, was featured in Newsweek for his opinion piece titled, “Three Ways to Support A Sense of Belonging for Students.” In the article, Chancellor Bing shares why a sense of belonging is a necessary component of student retention and success. Research has shown that students who feel valued, respected and connected to the greater campus community are more motivated and confident, and ultimately are able to achieve more. However, creating a sense of belonging is complex, especially for adult learners with complicated lives who make up an estimated 38% of today's student population in higher education.

Eric shares three ways institutions can build a student-centric campus community to ensure that all students feel a sense of belonging: 1) establishing structure and accountability from the beginning, 2) providing support and guidance for all students, and 3) demonstrating respect and compassion for students. He notes that if institutions begin the work of preparing students for success before they set foot on campus, students will feel like they belong long after they graduate.
