Today, Dr. Joanitt Montano, the Provost and Chief Academic Officer; and April Boyd, the Vice President of Financial Aid at The College of Health Care Professions (CHCP) co-authored a piece in the San Antonio Express-News titled “The FAFSA Issue Is Just One More Example of Why Colleges Must Meet Learners Where They Are.” As of July 2024, only 55.3% of Texas seniors had completed a FAFSA, which is an 11.2% decline from last year – resulting in potential long-term impacts for learners looking to pursue a credential or degree.

In the piece, they examine how this year’s FAFSA crisis is just one example of where higher education institutions often fail to understand or meet the needs of learners' educational pathways as they navigate increasingly complex systems and processes. In reflecting on the work that CHCP does to support students, April and Joanitt outline best practices for how institutions can actually support learners and put in place the success strategies to help students realize their dreams.
