Medical billing and coding professional are responsible for assisting healthcare providers and insurance companies to accurately code medical diagnoses and procedures in order to expedite the filing and payment of insurance claims. Core responsibilities include completing medical billing forms and filing medical insurance claims (both manually and by automation). Essential skills include practical application of CPT-4, ICD-9/10 and HCPCS codes, record-keeping for both hospital and physician offices, following procedures in content and filing of patient medical records, and using a variety of filing systems, both alphabetical and numerical. In addition, students will gain a general knowledge of anatomy, physiology and medical terminology, reimbursement methodologies, and customer service principles. Essentially, students will receive all the training necessary to work successfully in insurance companies/offices, physician offices, hospitals, outpatient medical facilities and long-term care medical facilities.
