Do you know what success is?
According to Merriam-Webster online, it is a “favorable or desired outcome; the attainment of wealth, favor, or eminence”. Wikipedia states “Success may refer to: a level of social status; achievement of a goal; the opposite of failure”
Recently I attended a seminar where several highly affluent speakers were stating that the amount of money a person possesses does not make a person successful, and that success means different things to different people. So how can we become successful?
First, Define Success
You need to define what success is for you, how it looks, how it smells, how it feels. Decide how you want to be successful, how can you reach your dream. It is better to dream BIG.
Next, Set Goals
We know the saying “People don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan”. Identify what skills and tools you need to reach your goals; start looking to sharpen your skills and figure out how to start with what you have. Think outside the box!
Then, Develop These . . .
Discipline – without it you will encounter too many distractions that keep you from reaching your goals. Additionally, many people will try to discourage you, saying “you’re crazy”, “there is no time”, “it’s impossible”, “you don’t have what it takes”. Stay focused and finish what you start. Be persistent, pushy, relentless; every time something goes wrong, try it again, and again, and again.
Courage - to deal with change and obstacles. We have to embrace change for without change there is no success. You have to be fearless and take risks; most people are not successful because their fear defeats them. We have to change our way of looking at failure, every failure is an opportunity closer to success.
Believe - in yourself, believe in your dream, believe in your skills, believe you deserve it, and believe you can do it!
Surround - yourself with successful people. My mother always told me, “Tell me who your friends are and I will tell you who you are”. Surround yourself with positive, driven, dynamic people and study successful people.
What do successful people do?
Take action - we can have the best dreams, the best goals and the best skills, but if you don’t act, if you don’t take action to follow your plan, nothing will get done; you won’t reach your goal. Start with the small steps, easier goals, and don’t take your eyes from the main goal, the big prize.
Learn to solve problems - be a problem solver; every problem and failure is an opportunity to learn and to help others. It is important to be resourceful.
Take care of yourself - exercise, take time to relax, go to sleep early; most successful people get up early because in the morning you can accomplish a lot more things before interruptions come your way throughout the day.
Be happy – choose to be happy right where you are, start learning how to move forward.
Are you ready to be successful . . . ?
“Success seems to be connected to action. Successful people keep moving. They make mistakes but they don’t quit.” Conrad Hilton
“To know how to be successful is to know that tomorrow is ALWAYS a new day. “ Erick Hamm
