Why become a medical assistant?

Medical Assisting is a great career for individuals who want an entry-level position in healthcare performing clinical and administrative duties.  Medical assistants are tasked with updating patient medical records, bookkeeping, assisting physicians with laboratory testing, developing and preparing X-rays and sterilizing medical equipment, to name a few responsibilities. Becoming a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) with an American Association of Medical Assistants' (AAMA) certification will open many jobs in Texas.

What do I need to do to become a medical assistant?

You should begin by researching accredited medical assisting colleges, such as CHCP, and reviewing admissions requirements.  Secondly, contact the financial aid office at the accredited school of your choice that offers a program in Medical Assisting.  A vigorous and robust curriculum in anatomy and physiology, pharmacology and medical terminology is essential to preparing you for a career in medical assisting.
Once your decision is made to attend CHCP, make sure you have requested official high school and/or previous college transcripts and make sure to obtain scores from any scholastic aptitude test you have taken or make arranges to take any assessment test you need.  Once enrolled in the program, continually build your teamwork and interpersonal skills.  Medical assistants work with dynamic teams and interact with patients to provide the best care possible.

What tests do I need to take to become a certified medical assistant?

Upon completion of the program, you can register to take the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) Certification Exam.  You can apply through the American Association of Medical Assistant (AAMA) website.  Make sure you study for the exam by using resources provided by the AAMA.  Many local chapters of the AAMA offer CAM exam review courses.  Check with your local area chapter for specific details.
